COVID-19

Like many people during the pandemic, I was let go from my job because my employer at the time could not afford to keep me on. Eventually, seven months later, I would start a new position at Bluberry Creative.

However, during the seven month interim I did not sit idle. I reached out to friends, former employers, and old classmates, hoping some would have freelance work to spare. As luck would have it, a few of them did, and the work I was able to get while I searched for my next workplace kept me busy during the long months of quarantine and isolation.

Luiz Martinez

Luiz Martinez is currently a graphic designer based in Conroe, TX, and we were both part of the College of Arts’ 2017 graduating class at the University of Houston. When I reached out to my list of former classmates for potential work they could spare, he was the only one who could help at the time. However, I was grateful for the opportunity to design a shirt logo for the 2020 Women’s Conference, and some social media graphics for a couple of Alive Church’s October events.

Padrón Design

One of the contacts I reached out to, while they didn’t have work for me at the time, was able to refer me to Gracie Padrón. She is the founder of then Padrón Design, which is now Padrón & Co. At the time Gracie said her company was working with Southern Yankee Beer Company, which had a line of beer labels that they were adding a new design to. Padrón Design needed a freelance illustrator to help them out, and I was more than willing to take on the challenge.

I sent two different concepts to Gracie, and she was grateful for the help. While the final illustration for what would become Southern Yankee Beer Company’s popular Cancún Commie flavor wasn’t exactly the same design, the second concept was able to make the refinement process easier for Gracie and her team. See the final product below for comparison.

Shop DYI

Another one of my contacts also referred me to someone who worked with Shop DYI. One of their usual tasks was to put out various emails for Shop DYI’s clothing campaigns, and they needed some assistance. I helped them finish the designs for the Memorial Day 2020 emails using a template and a selection of photos provided by my contact.

Williamsburg Enterprises - Ali Webre

Finally, one of my last referrals was with a real estate agent for Willaim Enterprises, Ali Webre. She needed a couple of videos made for her Instagram and other socials to help her promote new openings for businesses in Sienna Crossing. These were really fun to make, as it isn’t often that I get to use After Effects to make motion graphics and have a satisfied client at the same time.
